6 Human Foods Pets Should Avoid
When it comes to our furry friends, we have to be sure we are taking care of them. Dogs can’t tell us when something is wrong with them, so we need to make sure that we don’t feed them something that would make them ill. You may think that your dog can eat whatever you eat, but you’d be mistaken. You may be tempted to give your dog a treat from your plate, but some human food can make dogs ill and may even kill them.
If your pet accidentally ingests any of the foods listed below, they may experience the following symptoms of pet toxicity: restlessness, increased thirst and urination, vomiting and diarrhea, seizures, breathing issues, and even sudden kidney or heart failure:
1. Grapes and raisins
Grapes and raisins may seem safe to give to your dog because it’s a fruit, but that is not true. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure. It’s not known what in grapes makes them so toxic to dogs. A little or a lot can be fatal to dogs, so it is best to keep grapes and raisins as far from dogs as possible.
2. Onions and garlic
Onions and garlic can irritate a dog’s stomach and may cause damage to their red blood cells. This can cause anemia in your dog, and it may require a blood transfusion. A little bit may not hurt, but a lot may result in anemia. It’s better to just avoid it altogether.
3. Raw eggs
We all know that eating raw eggs can be harmful to humans. Well, they can also be harmful to dogs. Raw eggs also contain avidin, which is an enzyme that lowers the ability to absorb biotin. This can cause skin and coat issues in dogs.
4. Raw meat and bones
Dogs eat meat and bones, but they can’t eat raw meat and raw bones. It may not seem like a big deal, but it is. Raw meat, like raw eggs can contain Salmonella and E.coli, which can hurt your pets. Raw bones can be harmful to domesticated dogs because they aren’t used to eating them in the wild. A dog can choke on a raw bone or injure their digestive tract.
5. Chocolate
Most dog owners know that chocolate is harmful to dogs. Chocolate has theobromine and caffeine in it. These two substances are harmful to dogs because they can’t metabolize them. Eating chocolate may cause a dog to vomit, experience stomach pain, and dehydration. These symptoms can worsen and even result in death. Dark and bitter chocolate is the most lethal to dogs.
6. Caffeine
While you may love your caffeinated beverages, keep them far away from your dog. In dogs, caffeine can make their hearts race and cause problems for their nervous systems. If ingested, dogs may experience vomiting, extreme thirst, and restlessness. They also may not be able to control their bladder.
